If you have ever been driving down the road and noticed someone merge into the other lane because there was a tow truck driver or a police officer on the side of the road, you probably thought that they just did it out of courtesy. Chances are, however, that they are part of the very small portion of Americans that are aware of what is known as Slow Down or Move Over laws.

These laws are in effect in all 50 states across the United States to help save lives. Each year, hundreds of people lose their lives working on American highways from being struck by passing vehicles. These laws are designed to help reduce those fatalities as well as help you keep safe on the roadways.
Next time you see emergency workers on the side of the road with their emergency flashers on be sure to merge into the other lane when passing or slow down to 15 miles an hour below the posted speed limit to ensure that you are abiding by these laws. Here at Nissan of Chattanooga East, we hope that you will share this information with others so that we can increase the awareness surrounding these laws.
