New and certified used cars often come with powertrain and bumper-to-bumper warranties. The two vary greatly in the coverage they provide. A powertrain warranty replaces the parts that propel the vehicle. The components include the engine, transmission, differential, driveshaft, joints and other vital parts. But, parts of the system that are subject to wear and tear are not covered. These components include the battery, the clutch, drive belts and fluids.
On the other hand, a bumper-to-bumper warranty covers the powertrain and more. The comprehensive coverage additionally includes electronic components, the audio or infotainment system, the HVAC, suspension and more. But, similar to the powertrain warranty, the coverage does not include wear items. Vehicle glass, interior and exterior trim, upholstery and other common items subject to wear are not covered.
